Delete Gmail messages in OSX Mail but they all come back

But when you set Gmail up in OSX mail or iOS Mail it's always IMAP settings.

How can I delete 1000's of Gmail msgs in OSX Mail and have them deleted on the Gmail servers too so that all those messages don't come back again?
