All of a sudden, Mail is freezing on start-up

Well, this is new. As of this morning, when I open Mail, it freezes at the Verify Certificate point and I need to do a Force Quit to even close the application. At the point it freezes, the Preferences option becomes grayed out while almost every other option in the top menus remain. No messages can be clicked on and no new mail can be downloaded because it never gets past the verification point. Has anyone seen this happen before? My OS is up to date.

I've had that problem too. Never noticed a cause or a fix beyond a force quit.
