Amount of storage video uses differs b/t iTunes and About Mac?

iTunes indicates that I have 277 GB of movies and 77 GB of TV shows. When I look at the amount of storage being used on my hard drive, it shows 617 GB for movies. Is there a chance that videos are duplicated on my hard drive that I'm not aware. Any tips on investigating or explanation?

You could probably just do a search for a few specific movie titles and see if duplicates show up. It sounds like you store your movies in a different folder than iTunes designates, you could open the iTunes folder and see whats in there as well.

Thanks but I've tried the random search of names, and the only titles that appear are the movies in the itunes folder...the only place that I keep them. Once I import ripped movies into iTunes, I delete the mkv copy and mp4 copy in the movies folder.

What do you mean by "it shows 617GB for movies".... What view are you looking at? I guess what I'm wondering is... are you sure all 617GB are movies? Or are you assuming that based on their directory path?

I see the 617 number when I click the Apple in the top left hand corner of the screen > About This Mac > More Info > Storage...

I'm wondering how the system identifies movie files... whether it looks in your iTunes folder, your movie folder, or just looks for any type of movie file extension.

Have you looked at all of your movie/iTunes folders independently to see how much content it might be identifying that's not actually in your iTunes index?
