Totally depends on the girl. My fiance was shocked that I spent $6K (appraised at $13K) on hers. She would much rather have used the money for other expenses (e.g., house down payment). Turns out it was too big anyway so we returned it and spent just under $4K on a very nice ring that she loves.

That's the jewelry scam. You can have this $10k item for a steal at only $5k!! How can we afford to give it away at this price?? Never you mind!

Yup. Always found it comical that places like Kmart sell their jewelry at 95% off.

I've been married three times, I did notice however as my wives got younger, the price of the rings got larger.

I'm not big on spending tons of money on a ring. So, my wife's engagement ring was $700 and her wedding ring was $700.

We upgraded after 2 years later. Got store credit on her wedding ring and paid like $1200 more for a nicer set.

Did a ton of research before I ordered the ring for my GF (planning to ask the question later this month). It's surprising how much you can save by doing proper research, and knowing ahead of time exactly what you're looking for.

In my case I already knew the ring I wanted and size, as well as the size and grading of the diamond. Ended up ordering from a jeweler out of state, who is a authorized retailer (for Tacori), and saved a easy $3000 on the diamond and taxes combine as opposed to buying from a local shop.
