It's one thing to use racist slurs if you live by yourself in a shotgun shack with a dog named "Blue". It's a whole other thing to be a celebrity chef on a popular TV network.
I haven't followed this story that closely, but what I have read/hear seems to indicate that she admitted to using the "N" word years ago when asked about it in court.

As far as I can tell she's not in hot water over anything she did recently (except maybe tell the truth and own up to something she's undoubtedly not proud of).

But in this country we go for blood and we don't forgive or forget.

I too only have a limited understanding of the case.

However, I don't believe she's in court for simply using the 'N-word". She's being sued for discrimination, so I'm assuming there is more to her actions than just using a racial slur.

If she only used a racial slur 30 years ago, then whoever is taking her to court should just get over it.

I think the pushback is also because she didn't apologize for saying it. She kept making excuses about how it's a generational thing and it's different in the South and she really loves everybody and she totally isn't racist and blah blah wah wah.

I think the only thing she was sorry for was getting called out for what she said.

I firmly believe that there will be no progress in the south until Paula's generation, who came of age in the civil rights era, are deceased.

Cynical, but very true. The only problem I see here is what they've taught their children, as that will be their legacy. It will come to a halt eventually, but it has been handed down at least 1 if not 2 generations. But it will pass, and I'll celebrate the day it does (I don't plan on dying anytime in the next 225 years. )

Kind of makes me sick to my stomach to think I have to wish death upon people for social progress to occur. But c'est la vie.

Did she say those things after she became a celebrity chef? (I ask because I honestly don't know - the only celebrity chef I pay much attention to is AB.) Is that ugliness still a part of her personality?

She was born to Baptist parents in 1947 in Albany, Georgia. That's about as "Deep South" as a person can get. As a child, racism was clearly present and to many (most?) white southerners at the time, civil rights was as filthy as an epithet as any. She's pretty much admitted using the word in the past, unless she is a truly enlightened woman, it's likely she's used it more recently.

It appears that Jimmy Carter believes she is a truly enlightened woman... <shrug>
