Finger pad gestures

I have seen people talk about special 3/4 finger pad gestures and was wondering what they do. Sorry if this has been answered I'm new to macs.

I forget whether this is in the Quick Guide or the User manual both of which u can download from Apple.com

Basically u use a combination of fingers: One, Two, or Three to tell the interface what your intentions are. This is all configurable from the Menu -> Apple -> System Preferences -> Trackpad, to suit your taste.
