Verizon - Good Basic Phone that reads email?

Basically my mom has found that she really doesn't use her iPhone a whole bunch other than to check some of her emails. It would be cheaper for her to bump down to a basic phone, but she does want to keep her email.

What's a good easy to use phone that offers reading full emails and texting, or alternatively, is it possible to use a limited smartphone (like use a Blackberry as a basic phone, I remember reading somewhere someone did this)?

If she already has an iPhone and it's on contract or paid for, it won't be cheaper since she needs data plan for her emails for any phone. Unless she's going to sell her iPhone and that will offset some of the cost.

Agreed. I would just go down to the cheapest data rate for the iPhone.

I would first find out how much data is actually being used. Some people email lots of huge photos around. That's a good way to hit the caps on the cheapest data plans.

Check if your carrier has Blackberry plans. In Canada we have options such as email+BBM Blackberry plans that don't require a data plan.
