Synuti and phoneview are great apps for this. Phoneview obviously is for the newer devices and synuti for the classic. Synuti gives you 1000 free songs transferred before requiring a license.

But a way around that is to download the trial on multiple computers then burn CDs / upload to yours. However it's only 30$ for the full version I believe

Also how could you not retrieve your music, on an iPod and a PC its fairly easy to recover music off an iPod.
I'm sure if he spent even a small amount of time trying he would be able to get the music off.

I do not think there is a replacement for this and is most likely why Apple still sells them. I just bought another new anyway, I love having my entire music collection in one place.
