Why has there been no part leaks for this iPad mini? If it's really that close to launch, usually by now we get a leak of the display, the logic board, the camera, or some other part. I guess I just question how real this is without more leaks - because the past says that part leaks pretty much always happen when something is close to launch (like all previous iDevices).

I love the argument "Not happening. Apple would never cannibalize their own iPad sales". Yeah mkay, because the iPod Mini/Nano never existed, nor did the cheaper MacBooks or the MBA, since Apple would never cannibalize on sales of the big iPod (now 'Classic') or the MacBook Pro. There can only be a single one-size-fits-all offering, right?

If this thing is aggressively priced, it will sell to all those people who held off buying an iPad because they found it too expensive, and the rest will buy the Mini in sixpacks... one for remote control, one for guests, one for the kids to ruin, one for porn etc.

Jellybean is an amazing improvement over previous Android versions, but I wouldn't call it amazing compared to iOS. The hardware is pretty good, not great. The price point is awesome... until you realize what you've gotten. The form factor nails it. The Nexus 7 is a proof of concept and demonstrates there is a serious market demand for a 7" tablet.

Google has done the market research; now Apple will eat their lunch.

What "makes no sense" is that Apple has historically had multiple products in a particular product line... yet you seem to think the iPad should remain a single size.

Image iPhone - 4, 4S, 5

Image iPad - 7.85" 9.7"

Why does Apple make multiple sizes and models for most of its products... yet it's wrong for them to do the same for the iPad?

You say there is "no advantage" to the iPad Mini over the regular iPad...

So what is the advantage of the 11" Macbook Air over the 13" Macbook Air? Was that a mistake?

Why is it OK for Apple to make a smaller laptop... but it's crazy to make a smaller tablet?

How about this... Apple isn't making a smaller iPad because of threats from the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire.

Instead... they are expanding the iPad line like they've done with other products so many times before.

Does that make more sense?

I have to agree with this. I bought a Nexus 7 and I'm finding this pure Android experience pretty good. I did buy the Galaxy Note and I find the extra skin/overlay they put on the Android OS makes it clunky, but the Jelly Bean running on the Nexus 7 is very good.
The form factor and the easy to handle materials on the Nexus 7 help make it a pleasure to use without a case or any extra bulk. I use a screen protector and a sleeve so I can use the actual product without the extra bulk being between me and the unit.
I've been wanting something smaller than the iPad to carry out and about and the Nexus 7 fits the bill. It doesn't feel weird pulling it out in public and reading, surfing or whatever in any situation.
I am hoping Apple does a 7" range iPad just so I can keep the ecosystem complete with the other iPhones and iPads in my home.

BTW... Apple creates "completely new devices" all the time.

The original iPod was $400... and now you can get new iPod models starting at $50.

The original 13" Macbook Air was $1800... and now you can get an 11" starting at $1000.

Doesn't suck on the surface maybe, but the underpinnings are a different story. A couple of my clients make (serious) music software for iOS, and they have tons of people asking "Why no Android version? You're missing out on a huge market!". The answer is that the audio latency is so miserable that the music software (in some cases featuring real-time signal processing) becomes virtually useless.
It's the old issue with one vs multiple companies controlling the hardware and software/OS, just like Mac vs PC -- you get very low audio latency right out of the box with Mac, but with PC it's awful until you've installed special 'ASIO' drivers that come with your audio interface (or the generic ASIO driver that was hacked together in Eastern Europe somewhere).

Luckily for manufacturers, the average user just sees a GUI and will never know whether the inner workings of the OS are in order, or if they're a festering boil on the verge of exploding.

I'm so thankful then that I don't "write music software for iOS" and have to come up with answers to questions from people asking why I don't write music software for Android (thankfully they can focus on iOS since Android apparently gives them an excuse that they're not clever enough to engineer around).

From my perspective as an "average user" I'm happy with Jelly Bean and considering the $199 price tag, if its "festering boil"...explodes... or whatever , then I'll replace it with whatever new ~7" tablet suites my fancy (iOS, Android or otherwise).

May I just point out the new iPod Touch with A5 SOC and a 4" screen with a resolution of 1136 X 640 costs FROM $299 for 32GB plus tax.

IF a iPad mini ever turns up, which it won't, it will easily cost from $299 at least for a 16GB model.

I think you all need to realise Apple has shown it's hand, it will not be launching a cheap iPad mini, it cannot price it to compete. If anything I believe Apple will only make more expensive iPads maybe that match the ModBook pro idea.
Also it would be a joke to launch a tablet with a lower resolution then any other 7" on the market and even more so when your company is known for high res screens.

You were closer to the prince than I was. However, iPad mini's are in the stores now and the press conference was right around where I said it would be. I'll call this a draw.
