Just to be sure - is there a chance that what you are seeing is adhesive from the screen cover that was on it for protection?

Yup definitely a small nick no adhesive.
On a positive note, the iMac is amazing, screaming fast and just superb, got the i5, 1TB Fusion, 8 GB. I think 8GB is enough, the fusion is great to have, managed to restore from time machine backup in 1 hour usually took like 4-5 hours previously. And a lot of stuff open it just screams away.

i see both sides....its a desktop computer that will face a wall. no one will ever see it. not worth the effort. on the other hand you just paid almost 3k for the thing.

Id be happy with $150 back.

It's nice that they did something for you. While I agree with others that it isn't a huge blemish, I would be disappointed if my $2600 computer showed up in anything less than pristine condition.

Should I replace or keep using it.
It is a nice computer though.

It's not bad what would be bad is an awful screen, any bad backlight bleed?!?!

If the mark was on the front, then yes I would get it replaced as your eyes would then be getting drawn to it, but on the back where its out of view, then personally I would not bother getting it replaced.

If the iMac has other issues like screen yellowing, backlight bleeding then yeah go for getting it replaced, but not just for a very small mark that's on the back where you wont see it

Just before reading the apple call part and compensation I was thinking exactly this, I mean if you pay this amount of money, you pay it because it has to be close to perfect. But still sending back this 27" iMac just because of that it does not make sense and a small compensation is definitely the best solution for this kind of things. So now you can just buy an external CD/DVD and some adapters you will need in near future :P
