I have an early 2008 dual quad.
SSD as boot, WD Black for virtual machines, WD green for data, WD green for TM.

I don't do photoshop or video intensive tasks but run several vms via fusion.

Is there a video adapter that would give me third or fourth display for cheap (less than $100).

I don't want to stick something into a slot n find out its diff voltage etc.

If you're running Lion or later, you can actually just throw in any cheap NVIDIA PC card that doesn't require auxiliary power (like a GT 630) in an open PCIe slot. You won't get the 5 GT/s link speed without a properly modified/flashed EFI card, but that won't matter if it's just to run additional displays.

With Lion, I believe you need the drivers from NVIDIA still to make a 600 series card work, but those drivers would be already built into Mountain Lion.
