Original iPod 5GB - which version of iTunes to use?

I've discovered my old original 5GB iPod (thought I had lost it ages ago)!!

Question is, how do I now copy music across?

I've got a 2012 Macbook Air and have bought the Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter and then a 800 to 400.

However, when I connect it shows on the desktop for a second, then loads iTunes and doesn't appear. If I look under System Report it lists the iPod under Firewire.

Running iTunes 11, which I assume is too late for the original iPod?

Any help would be highly appreciated.

iTunes 11 should work. It's just your cables.

Can you stick it in disk mode?
