Hi

I ordered the 27inch iMac December 5th. Apple is still processing the order so it has not yet arrived.

For a Christmas gift, I asked for the USB Superdrive since the new iMac lacks an optical drive

I tried to test it on my current 24inch early 2009 iMac but it doesn't seem to recognize it.

I read however that in the past, the external Superdrive is only compatible with portables/the mini ( macbook pro, mini, air, ...)

Will it work with my new iMac however or should it work with my 24inch and is my unit defective or something

There is a pram setting you can use to test it in your SuperDrive-equipped Mac.

i read somewhere on the apple store that its only compatible with Macbook air, mac mini, Retina Macbook pros and 2012 imacs.

the lack of universal support put me off buying it in the end as I occasionally want the flexibility to use it with my Windows Laptop.

I've burnt loads of discs on my 2012 iMac with apple super drive, no issues!

Open terminal type:

Code:
sudo nvram boot-args="mbasd=1"

Hit enter.

Restart.

The Drive will now burn cds on your old iMac. I read however that dvd player wont recognize the drive, but vlc will.
