I hook up my MacBook Pro to my AV receiver via HDMI. Do I have to keep reconfiguring Audio MIDI Setup to use 5.1?

What about format frequency (32KHz or 192KHz)? 8ch-24bit integer or encoded digital audio?

I'm using VLC Player to play movies that have surround sound.

as long as the sound is dolby digital, or DTS, all you need to do is go to the audio menu in VLC, and set the audio output to "HDMI (encoded)" and VLC will pass the raw stream to your receiver.

Doh, I've never noticed that option in VLC before.

Does this mean I've never had proper 5.1 from any files I've played in VLC?
