Apple ID setup question

I'm in the process of creating new Apple IDs for my wife and I to use with iCloud, iMessage, etc.

I currently only have one Apple ID that we share. I would like to change that to have three in total. One will be for the Store purchases and the other two for our personal iCloud/iMessage "stuff".

My questions is that I would like to use the email address (Apple ID) that we share as my personal Apple ID and create a new email address for the shared Apple ID. If I rename the currently shared Apple ID will the old one be lost (because I'd like to keep using it).
