Seriously, try deleting her contact entry and then create a new one for her. See if that works.

This. I've also had luck going in and changing the contact so it's not showing as an iphone. ie not deleting it, just modifying it.
If shes not in your contact list, add her, and delete that old conversation.

iMessage works totally fine for me. Never had an issue with it.

I've never had any major issues with iMessage on my 4S and now on my i5.

No problems here. Out of the main people I text, all but one have iMessage. I use it on my iPhone 5 and MacBook Pro.
