New LaCie d2 Thunderbolt External Drive

Looks like a nice new external Thunderbolt drive for the desktop, except for 1 big omission. It only has a single TB port.

Whats gives with this. Especially for a desktop product, it defeats a big TB selling point which is the ability to daisy chain devices.

I would love to get this but I have my monitor as the end of my TB chain.

Now that Macs have USB 3.0, what's the point of Thunderbolt for a hard drive?

You can get a 3TB external USB 3.0 drive from Seagate, Western Digital, etc. for under $150.

That's why I went with the little big disk. It's a bit more expensive but at least you can daisy chain.

Sorry still don't get it -- usb3 and TB spec on the Lacie website is the same for this drive. If it has a spinning drive how can it be otherwise?

One of the reasons I went with the mini is that it still has a FireWire port, unlike the new iMac.
FireWire may be on its way out, but most externals are still USB2 or FW. USB3 and TB are still slow in coming out and TB is still expensive.

I bought a Western Digital 3TB MyBook for my 2012, running over FW800, and I have two monitors, so need the TB port for that.

People who need sustained throughput don't buy USB in any form.
