While I currently run a shanzhai "Apple" 27" IPS 2560x1600 over DP (and am quite happy with it), I do find the need for more pixels. My Air only has 1 mini-dp/thunderuseless port, so I'm stuck with one external display.

I've been keeping an eye on 4k tv set pricing, and the 40" screens are in the same pricing realm as the 27" was when I bought it a few years ago, but offer about 30% more pixels.

I can get a 39" 4K set for about 3900rmb retail or about 3500rmb online (slightly less than 600$ USD); that will give me 3840×2160, albeit over HDMI.

I realise that HDMI is limited to 24fps at 4K resolutions, but the question is, can the Air drive it?

Setup would be minidp -> hdmi -> set.

Set supports HDMI 1.4b (so 4k @24fps).
Air is the MacBookAir5,2.

Anyone tried it yet?

If not, I guess I'll need to go buy a DP->HDMI with 4k Support and see at the store.

Sadly looks like i'm going to be limited by the HD4000 display - it can only do 2560x1600 at best., and as its single link, can only pump out not very "HD" over HDMI.

Guess i need to upgrade to a retina...

MBA 2013 Haswell

I was thinking of doing the same thing by upgrading my MBA 2011 to 2013 Haswell with the integrate GPU 5000. The 5000 is supposed to support 4k.

This paired with the seiki 39" 4k monitor seems like a pretty good developer setup. I was going to buy the 2013 and take it into a sony store to test on one of their $5,000 4k monitors.

Just checking to see if anyone has tried Haswell with a 4k monitor and if the refresh rate was decent for non-video work.

Thanks!

Unless you mean a 15 inch retina, because the 13 inch rMBP have the same graphics cards as last year's airs.
