iOS will be useful for education when you can finitely lock students into or out of apps and features based on other events. Eg. you can only access a certain app until you achieve certain time and work goals at which time other apps or features are unlocked.

The current restriction features are not flexible enough to be useful.

A no brainer (and now non-patentable) feature that should have been implemented from day one.

I agree with that, but if iOS7 is any indication, they are working on that continuously. It may just be a few version revisions more, probably after Android implements it or a decent App Store product does it and Apple buys them.
