Is the mp4 formatted really ripped ? or is it just a reformatted video that idvd cannot recognize ?
RIPPING means "copying while removing a copy protecting scheme".
HandBrake does "rip" M4V files. M4V files are normally meant for iTunes and are just MP4 files with added data like DRM.

If you really want to copy a purchased video from iTunes onto a video DVD in order to circumvent to connect your Mac directly to a TV, you are either left to buy the actual DVD or go that other route. iTunes content with DRM is no meant to be copied, and burning a video DVD is creating a copy.
