How do notifications work on galaxy phones?

For the S3 for example for text messages, email, twitter and notifications for apps like espn scorecenter or any sport updates apps.. Do they make a noise when they come through? Does the screen light up to let you know you have a notifcation? How exactly does it work differently to the iphone notifications?

They show up at the top notifications bar/status bar which you can expand too

You can customize the sound, vibration, etc. or lack thereof for each service

There is a LED light that can notify you about notifications too (like SMS, Mail, Facebook, etc.) without needing to turn on the screen!

You can also download an app to customize the color of the notification led for incoming notifications. Missed calls can be red, emails can be blue, text, can be green, etc..

Excellent thanks for your help. Is that just for texts or sport scores from apps too?

Notifications are controlled at the app level. In each app, you can configure how that app will notify you of events. You can choose different notification sounds for instance. Also, the SGS3 has a notification light. Different apps will light up this notification light differently. The colour may be different and the light may flash or be on constantly. Different apps will have a different ability to control this notification light. Some apps will have more notification options than others.
