Key Lime iBook Apple Online Store only

I just watched the 2000 Macworld keynote where Steve Jobs announces the 2nd generation iBook. Every time he says the Key Lime model can only be bought through the Apple Online Store, the audience starts booing. I'm just curious, why was this such a big deal back then?
