Only if you fullfill the contract or pay the ETF.
You can purchase an IMEI unlock for any AT&T iphone for $2-3 though and the phone is carrier unlocked for good.

so you can buy a locked ATT phone on ebay and pay $2-$3 and get it IMEI unlocked? why would anyone ever use a gevey sim then?

what's the diff between an ATT unlock and a ebay IMEI unlock?

I apologize for the noob questions, lol.

An unlock is an unlock. It just means that that the phone's IMEI is placed in Apple's database as unlocked. ATT does it for free if your phone is off contract. Others charge a few bucks.

Exactly.
Some still use gevey sim adapters with locked iphones from sprint or Verizon or other carriers that they cant find easy imei unlocks like AT&T iphones.
