Ipod touch 4 and itunes 11.0.1

I am a newbie to music transfers. I know how to transfer music from itunes 11. to an ipod nano but when I try the same transfer from itunes to Ipod touch 4 I fail.
I seem to have to use the Sync feature, but I want to avoid the headache involved in choosing Sync, because hundreds of songs that are not wanted on the Ipod touch 4 automatically go BACK on to the Ipod Touch, when I click Sync.
With the Nano I merely, simply drag music from Itunes to Nano... done!
Please help this lost at sea user!
