NumPad on MacBook Pro?

you hold fn or press num lock on F6

I don't think the unibody MacBooks Pro have number pads. Older models do, though.

Press fn+F6 and you'll see a little green light appear under the f6 key.

Then the keypad buttons will be in operation.

Not on a Unibody. This feature has been removed.

Not available on the early 2008 MBP either.
You have to use the top row number keys or buy a USB number pad.

F6 is one of the keyboard backlight keys.
Even the old PPC iBook had number pad keys and a number lock option to use them.
