I belive you need Lion (10.7) before you can go to Mountain Lion (10.8). I forget, but does Snow Leopard have the Mac App Store? That's where you go to get Lion.
The last version of Snow Leopard brings the Mac App Store. From there you can upgrade to Mountain Lion.
