Aperture
Logic ( Only if you are into music production) Pages Numbers Handbrake ( DVD Ripping App...free) VLC ( also free works with Handbrake) Dropbox Thunderbird ( alternative email client...Also free) MakeMV ( for use with Blu-Ray drives) I have a bunch of other things, but the above are what I use the most...Add a few games of your choice and some of the apps in the post above and I'd say you'd be good to go.

More Apps
Thunderbird is a brilliant email client if you've used it on PC, but on Mac I personally prefer "Sparrow".
Adobe Photoshop + Lightroom, 100 times better than Aperture I use 1Password and Love it! Pages, Numbers, Keynote not Microsoft Office (you've made the move to Mac OS, why bring Windows Office Suites with you?) AppCleaner - Brilliant for novices to uninstall Apps efficiently. Handbrake - Brilliant for Ripping DVDs, however you don't have a DVD drive (presuming new iMac) VLC - Great Media Player which plays everything under the sun! Coda 2 and Transmit 4 - If you do a lot of Web Work Google Chrome - I find Safari very annoying and frustrating, Chrome solves this. VMWare Fusion/Parallels - for running Windows Apps from within OS X. |

Why are people recommending such expensive software to the OP? Adobe Photoshop? Really? He didn't say he needed extensive photo-editing software. And somebody recommended iPhoto which already comes on the Mac.
@OP I would highly recommend that you do take a good look at the Mac App Store. There are a lot of good alternatives to expensive softwares already recommended here. For example, you can try "PixelMator". I use it constantly for our office to touch up and enhance photos for banners, business cards. Has very good layering features and blur options. Unless your office requires Adobe, you won't look back at Photoshop once you use Pixelmator. It's only $15 on the Mac App Store. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pixe...07963104?mt=12 Also, the Mac App store does show the top 10 downloaded softwares. |

You can also use the gimp which is free, works very similar to photoshop but not as expensive!

he didn't say there was a money limit he just said he wanted fun apps lol. Who knows he might be a billionaire. Plus lets face it there is probably a 95% chance he would *whistle* it if he does jump for it.

I was using Pages and Numbers, but my company subsidized Office for Mac, so now I use that instead, and like it much better!
I'm considering get a higher end photo tool (such as Aperture), but not sure if it's worth it at this time as my only camera is my iPhone 5. I'm not a big gamer, but I do enjoy pinball games. I picked up Zen Pinball and Pinball HD from the App Store.

App cleaner or something similar as others have said it no longer appears.
Gemini - I like this. 2 computers can sometimes mean duplicate files appear if you aren't on top of things. Dropzone looks kind of interesting. I might see if there is a free trial of it around. I'd love to be able to drag and drop a document and have it set up so it just automatically sends to a predetermined recipient without me needing to do anything. And of course VLC. Wickedly good Video Player. It was a bit dodgy a few years ago, but I love what they've done with it. Anybody know an email app that can help me with mac mail?

I know man but remember that open source exist as long as there is a bulk of people willing to spare some of their free time to maintain it.. Everyone wants free stuff but very few are willing to give them...
