Passbook has nothing to do with Maps. The location-based lock-screen notifications are based on geographical coordinates (longitude and latitude). See here under "Relevance Information".

Just another thing to add to the long list of Forstall's failures...

Just like Siri & Maps...

I like it. I used my Starbucks card without unlocking my phone. Was pretty cool.

It's not that Passbook is or isn't widely implemented, it's that it was one of the few selling points for iOS 6. And they didn't sell it by saying "give us a few years and it will be great!".

BTW, the Apple Store app was updated today. Apparently it now supports gift cards that can be added to Passbook.

Except that searching for "gift card" only returns iTunes Store/App Store gift cards.

Yeah. Unfortunately guess what it says in the brackets? (U.S. Only) - probably forever until Canadian or any other support comes. Why? I do not know. Just like it took them forever to release an Apple Store app for countries other than U.S.

The only experience I have with Passbook is the Starbucks add-on. It has worked great for me thus far. Rewards respond fast to each purchase as well as reloading my account/ card is easy and fast (with paypal) as well.

*Edit: I utilize mine in the Midwest (USA)
