So now Wall Street is in charge of product development? As I recall, the whole iWatch thing originated on Wall Street - now Google and Samsung have their panties in a wad. That's fine, let Wall Street define those two companies, their products will totally suck.

----------

... it's called the iPod Nano. All they have to do is add a wrist band, tweak the physical design, and change the software. Perhaps instead of being an iPhone accessory, Apple's "iWatch" will simply be an updated iPod Nano?

Yes, because those companies read Wall Street rumors and then start to make products according what Apple will do.

I don't know what is more ridiculous, believing that nonsense or claim. Infact that everything that is not Apple sucks.

I think the smart watch is actually a decent idea. Useful for when you're in a meeting and it would be rude to get your phone out to check the time or read a message. Useful also to actually be able to feel the vibration of the notification (I often miss it when it's in my pocket and I only ever have my phone on mute).
Useful also for having a sports tracker app running in your phone in your bag whilst cycling and being able to see stats on the watch.
I recently bought the Sony Ericsson liveview watch and it does all of the above. It's far from perfect but for the price you can't go wrong.
I'm interested to see what samsung/google/apple come up with.
I definitely don't think it's a bad idea if done well.

Proof that there needs to be a "Comment of the Day" section on the front page of MacRumors. This is brilliant

Wouldn't it be hilarious if NONE of these smart watches actually told the time?

I don't understand the fascination of the "smart watch". Are these things supposed to be so you can have easy access to information from your phone, without having to pull out your phone? Isn't that kind of defeating the point of having a fancy phone?

I wouldn't be able to wear one of these at work, so I don't see it being practical for me. That, when it comes to watches, I'm an old fashioned analog guy.

Google do their own thing and despite people's beliefs, Google's archival is not Apple but Microsoft.

The idea of a smart watch has been on Google's radar for a couple of years now. They even filled patents for it back in 2011, I believe. It makes perfect sense for them to build such a device considering Google Now. I think that a Google smart watch that integrates with Now would be killer.

They have actually been getting more focused and have been streamlining and better integrating their product line more and more ever since Larry took over as CEO in 2011. But surely you can't expect Google to focus solely on their search engine. Like every other company they need to expand and either create or enter new markets and find new ways to drive revenue into their core products.

Their push with Google Drive/Apps is aimed to tackle Microsoft on the enterprise (the Chromebooks too albeit to a much lesser extent as they are not quite there yet). Their efforts here and with products such as Google+ and Google Now serve as bridges, as it were, that drive revenue back to their core business/pruducts (Search, Gmail, Maps and Youtube which is where the ads are served). If they only focused on improving the search engine they would be missing opportunities.

I'm really not sure what the point of any of your posts in this thread have been. They've either been factually incorrect or complete non-value add.

Will Apple release a smart-watch... Maybe
Will Google/Motorola release one... Maybe
Will Samsung release one... Again... Probably
Will others try... Certainly
Will it be copying Apple... Almost certainly not
Do markets only exist when Apple enter them... Only in the minds of a segment of Apple fans

I agree except the 5th point. They will be copying Apple if and when Apple makes a smartwatch, because as always, Apple will make it better or at least market it better so everyone will be opting for one.

Samsung released the first WatchPhone back in 1999 called the SPH-WP10

Samsung also released a WatchPhone in France during 2009, called the S9110

Quote:
The sleek S9110 is a mere 11.98mm thick thanks to the company’s advanced surface mounting technology, making it the slimmest watchphone device in the market. Featuring a 1.76” full touch screen customized for the wrist-watch form factor, the S9110 aims to attract mobile phone users who want a unique fashion item that keeps them connected on the go. The device also enables the users to check their e-mail seamlessly through Outlook.

In 1999, Samsung introduced the world’s first watch phone, the SPH-WP10, which became a landmark product in the mobile industry. The S9110 will be available in France this month for around 450 Euros.
Bet lets not let facts get in the way eh?!

It would tell you who is calling via caller ID. It would tell you the temperature (on Google watches, only if you wanted it to, but on Apple watches, you would have no choice in the matter). It would alert you to an incoming SMS, but the text of the SMS would require using your gigantic 3.5 inch screen to actually read it.
Are you trying to imply that Apple doesn't currently give you the choice as to whether to display the temperature in the notifications center? Because they actually do...

You have no idea what you're talking about. If Google thought like that, Youtube, Android, and several other things would not be in the portfolio. You're looking at it from a small picture perspective instead of big picture.

Hilarious thread, folks. Debating who's the innovator in smartwatches? This was settled in the 1980s.

Until somebody shows us something impressively useful about these rumored copycat watches, there's a company who's still the real innovator in this field:
