About This Mac shows I nearly have 5gb free, but I'm puzzled by the largest space hog designated as "Other." How can I find out more about that & free up space w/out deleting something essential?

Downloaded Omnisweep & need some schooling before I delete something necessary. Thx.

I've never used omnisweep so i cant help you there. Disk inventory X is a free program i have been using on all my macs for years to see what is filling up my drives.

If you're wondering what "Other" category in the Lion/ML storage tab is about, this may help explain:
What is this "Other" in the storage tab? What is eating my space
For space issues not explained by the above, there are a few things you can try, some of which may or may not apply:Here are a few resolutions found by others with the same question:Freeing up space in Mac OS X

How OS X and iOS report storage capacity

stuck

My computer is a school-issued computer and I cannot download any programs at all. So, I don't know what to do, because I have only had my computer for about two months and it keeps saying that it's full and I am constantly deleting files that I need on accident, I don't know what to do! What is a startup disk? It sounds like the first of many disks of storage because "start"up disk. What is it, is there more room beyond the startup disk? I NEED MORE ROOM WITHOUT DOWNLOADING A PROGRAM AND I AM STUCK!!!!
Sincerely,
A person in need of help
