I did the same thing, but instead of purchasing from the itunes store, i downloaded my silent ringtone from audiko.net, dragged it to itunes, and it automatically went into the ringtones section.

No use for a silent ringtone here, but purchasing one?? I don't get it.
Downloading a free one or just recording your own should be simple.
