Yup and MacRumors make money either way as the AppShopper links are also affiliate links.

The Direct Link is impossible to follow (it goes directly to Apple's domain, meaning MR won't know when you arrive, and there's no JS triggered by the link to say you've clicked it.)

But it looks like going to AppShopper then clicking on their Buy link will track you.

Love the update, it's annoyingly hard and isn't helping my battery life!

It is really annoyingly hard. In fact so hard that I don't really enjoy playing it
any more. It pissed me off to no end that I quit at level 14.

Check again :)

Take this post for example: https://www.macrumors.com/2013/07/0...cinema-stabilization-for-front-facing-camera/

The [Direct Link] - hover it, and it looks like its going directly to Apple. Right click it and copy the link and paste it somewhere. It's a Viglink.

Specifically, the exact link is this:

Code:
http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&key=c6684b5502fa2a415a104d824988c196&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.macrumors.com%2F2013%2F07%2F05%2Finstagram-updated-with-landscape-support-cinema-stabilization-for-front-facing-camera%2F&v=1&libId=e2db3f52-34b8-4e1f-bc92-ad365d662bed&out=https%3A%2F%2Fitunes.apple.com%2Fus%2Fapp%2Finstagram%2Fid389801252%3Fmt%3D8&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.macrumors.com%2Fiphone%2F&title=Instagram%20Updated%20with%20Landscape%20Support%2C%20Cinema%20Stabilization%20for%20Front-Facing%20Camera%20-%20Mac%20Rumors&txt=Direct%20Link&jsonp=vglnk_jsonp_13732279867436

Decoded that looks like this:

Code:
http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&key=c6684b5502fa2a415a104d824988c196&loc=https://www.macrumors.com/2013/07/05/instagram-updated-with-landscape-support-cinema-stabilization-for-front-facing-camera/&v=1&libId=e2db3f52-34b8-4e1f-bc92-ad365d662bed&out=https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/instagram/id389801252?mt=8&ref=https://www.macrumors.com/iphone/&title=Instagram Updated with Landscape Support, Cinema Stabilization for Front-Facing Camera - Mac Rumors&txt=Direct Link&jsonp=vglnk_jsonp_13732279867436

Every single outgoing link to Apple, Amazon, eBay, whatever - they all go via Viglink.

The same applies to TouchArcade and AppShopper - its how MacRumors makes a (hell of a big) income. :)

Excerpt from the page source (added bold for emphasis on the "Direct Link" portion.)

I also tried your copy and paste method, and a link to Apple's domain was pasted. I even tried it on the specific story you suggested.

If you BUY the app, there are NO ads and there ARE free updates.

not any more.
I was clear on the paid version they even are shoving ads in there. Mind you the ads are for their stuff but still ads. Plus they push you to keep doing all the micro purchases. What used to be a really great game just became so loaded down with crap.

The link TO AppShopper wouldn't be running through it - it'll be enabled for external (moneymaking) sites. For example the app links, links to the Apple online store, etc.

My point is, for MacRumors (or any 'big' Mac/App site) Angry Birds posts = big revenue. Random Mac App posts = little revenue.
