I have to agree. I got mine in July and immediately fell in love with it (coming from a D300, and before that, a D200, and before that, an F5).

Yeah, it's expensive. But it's worth it, especially shooting raw.

Fred Miranda forums is where I do all my buying and selling. You can join the forums for free but to participate the buy and sell forums, you need to pay $9. I highly recommend it. The people are great (make sure you check their ratings), transactions are fast. Since you'll be new there, you'll need to link to your eBay transactions so people know you're trust worthy. THEIR SYSTEM OPERATES ON TRUST. There's no eBay to back you up. Again, I highly recommend it. I unloaded my D7K and a few lenses there. I purchased a D700 and unloaded the D700 there. And it's certainly less expensive than what Ebay/Paypal rape you for.

Another high ISO shot, this time at ISO 4000. I'm not hesitant to use the full normal ISO range on the D800.

At ISO 5600, I'd say the high ISO works very well. About a stop better performance than my old D700.
This started out as a full resolution photo, but I went with a vertical crop at 2770x4150. Again, the extra pixels give lots of room for editing.

Underexposed by more than a stop. Brought back to proper exposure with great results even with high ISO of 1600. Auto white balance works very well and much improved from the D700.

I've just updated my D200 with a D600. The improvement in quality (in all aspects - resolution, high ISO, speed of use, etc) is incredible and the full frame depth of field is something I had always missed with DX. I preferred the button layout of the D200, which the D800 is more similar too than the D600 (which is more similar to the D7000 layout I would say).

I'm incredibly happy with the D600 and would like to replace my second D200 body with a D800 once funds allow - however, I need to replace my DX lenses first with FX versions

Thank you. This shot sealed the deal for me and the new 85 1.8G. Glad to finally see Nikon updating the glass. I'd like this lens along with the 28 1.8G and the 50 1.8G

I'll have to settle for the d600 though.

Try B&H Photo, they offer trade in programs.

I sold all of my Canon bodies and glass and made the switch over to a D800. I like the camera allot, the hand comfort level could be improved. If you plan on shooting RAW with a D800, get use to large file sizes.

Yeah will d600/d800 only work with FX lenses? I have a lovely lovely lense which cost more than my D200, Ideally, Id like to change the body rather than body and lens.

This is all after I pay off my laptop, ipad and S4 kontroller though

It'll work. If in FX mode, you'll get vingetting. If your in DX mode, you'll get reduced megapixels. At least on the D800, not sure about the 600.

It really is an excellent lens. I have the f/1.8 trinity and this gives the best resolution of the group. Followed by the 28, then the 50. The 85 is Nikon's best bang for the buck.

Yup, D600 is the same. You can easily switch between FX and DX mode (I've assigned the Fn button for this, rather than have to delve into the menu). Crop lines then appear in the viewfinder for the DX field of view.

D600 is:
24 megapixels in FX
10 megapixels in DX (so the same as a D200 in terms of resolution, but way way waaaaayyyy better at high ISO settings)

You can use DX lenses in FX mode, and as Razeus said, you get vignetting (although you could crop this off later in Photoshop/Aperture/Lightroom and reduce resolution to the same as DX mode).

Based on your photos I think it's time for me to sell my old 85 f1.8D and get the new version instead! The D lens produces nasty purple fringing (when the shot has strong backlighting) with digital sensors.

Yep, I had that D lens. I got rid of it soon as I heard the G version was much better. The purple fringing on the D drove me crazy, especially if I was doing portraits with tree branches or wires in the background. I could barely even get rid of them in Photoshop. I let the D lens be someone's problem and got the G and never looked back.

I suggest a 15" rMBP with max CPU and memory. Remember that you will have the laptop for several years. The workload will be going up from new OS and app releases. Also a maxed rMBP is easier to release later.

We also got the 768GB SSDs. The reason is that it leaves over 600GB of SSD space to take multiple week trips and downloading thousands of files. We we get home and finish the editing, the finished files are moved off the SSD and onto external drives that are backed up. We don't need or want to carry around 100s of GB of complete photos. Photos we want to show to family and friends are exported as jpgs to Retina Ipads.

I'm still an advocate for the unibody MBPs. The cMBP 15" with a high-res display (both glossy and matte) has enough resolution for comfortable use. Also with the cMBPs, you can upgrade your hard drive and add a second hard drive for up to 2TB of internal storage! Not to mention super cheap aftermarket SSDs which are cheaper than Apple's offerings and perform much better.

And the RAM is upgradeable on the cMBP, so you can spend $70 for 16GB of RAM instead of $200 on Apple's page!

As for graphics performance, the cMBP trumps the rMBP simply because it has to push less pixels through the same GPU. The cMBP thus has better performance.

The only things that the rMBP clearly beats the cMBP in are the mobility and resolution. If you can manage with less of both, then you can get away with a cheaper, faster computer.

My suggestions are as follows:
15" high-end cMBP with High Res display ($2300)
16GB aftermarket RAM ($70)
256GB SSD with Optibay ($230)
Which is $2600. You get 1TB of storage total and better performance for $200 less than the base high-end rMBP 15". Heck, you can even go for a 512GB SSD if you want and still be cheaper than the rMBP!

In a digital photography forum....mobility and resolution have to be the two key functional requirement areas. If you want a cRMP...get it in the next year because laptops with moving parts (spinning disks) will soon be a thing of the past like built in CD/DVD drives. I think Apple has made a very clear message on CD/DVD based on the new rMBP and iMacs.
