Normal people save them to the computer, not erase them entirely.

Usually if I sold my iPhone it's due to receiving a new one. I do a backup and then transfer the data including pictures to the new phone then wipe the old one.

I use my old 3G as a back up phone in-between upgrades. I will soon retire this back up 3G for the kids i.e. touch status once I get the 5.

My 1st one is being used as ipod in my wife's car. 3g & 3gs are used for travel out of country. Sold the 4 to purchase ipad mini cor my son. Sold both 4s and got ourselves the 5.
