iPhone 4, bb 04.12.02 unlock

I've got my hands on a iPhone 4, version 6.0.1, base band 04.12.02. My question is unlock-ability. It does not seem that this base band is unlocked, but I'm wondering if I upgrade the software to a newer version, would the new base band be unlocked yet? I'm not sure what base band upgrading will give me, so I'm very cautions before I try this, of course. Just wondering where I should go from the current version and firmware. Thanks!
