It is basically a VAT/sales tax in place of all income tax. Flat, of course, if it were scaled or bracketed (higher tax on bigger-ticket items) it might be more reasonable. And/or if there were an asset/property tax on a national level to back it. Personally, I think assets need to be taxed, that would be the ultimate non-regressive tax.

I have. "fair tax" is a flat tax with a prebat up to the poverty line.

Problem is it even with that it shift the tax burden off the rich and more heavily onto the poor and middle class.
What I have seen time and time again with anyone who argues the "fair tax" get caught up in the name and do not understand how it is anything but fair.

Now that we are agreed that there is no IRS scandal, the subject naturally devolves to taxes (IRS and all).

haxrnick, you should consider what it looks like to a visiting interplanetary explorer, a physicist, or an anthropologist. On your first arrival to planet earth, you notice that a small group is consuming 50% of everything, and, consumption declines down to certain groups barely eating. You notice the small (let us call them "rich") people are building, and breaking, yachts, attending parties, after which enough food is thrown away to feed a large number of the people without much (let us call them "poor"), and consuming vast amounts of water, minerals, and fossil fuels, directly or indirectly.

So what? The relevant point here is that the term sometimes used to refer to the spending by the rich, "spreading the wealth", is nonsensical. The "rich" are consuming vast amounts. From the standpoint of the "poor", most of that consumption is irrelevant. The poor benefit from investments that create jobs. They don't benefit from the water, energy, etc. consumed directly.

Money is a social construct. It is misleading to forget that. Money isn't very visible from 50,000 feet, even as the vast consumption by the rich is quite visible from 50,000 feet. Just look out an airplane window as you fly over.
