What model of disk drives in late 2012 iMacs?
I couldn't make out much from the tear down photos of the 21-in model but it seemed the disk drive was an HGST (Hitachi/Western Digital) and maybe the TravelStar 5K1000.
Is anyone able to confirm this? And if so, perhaps the 27-in models will have the DeskStar drives? |

My 21" has a Seagate, but Apple doesn't spec out drives from one specific vendor. Any given iMac could have any brand of drive...whatever was available when it was being built. I think the exception to the rule is MPs have WD Black drives, nothing less.

My iMac has an HTS541010A9E662 Hitachi and the SM128E Samsung for Fusion.

According to R.OG's teardown pics, the base 1TB drive in the 27-in models is the Western Digital Caviar Blue.
I would hazard a guess that the 3TB drives are also WD Blue. Western Digital own Hitachi whose drives are used in the 21.5-in models. |

Well my 3TB Fusion arrived today and it's a Seagate Barracuda ST3000DM001.
I read reviews elsewhere saying they are noisy but I have yet to hear any noise whatsoever from the iMac, it's so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Another review of the Seagate 3TB. |

3 TB WD Blues don't exist. The largest size of Blue that WD makes is 1 TB.
There's now another thread on this topic: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1510017 The evidence so far suggests that all the 3 TB drives are Seagate 7200.14s. The 1 TB drives seem to be a mix of Seagate 7200.14s and WD Blues. |
