Mine died in less than a week. I took it into the Apple Store and the employee first asked me if I had an appointment at the Genius Bar. When I said no I was just in the mall shopping so I thought I would just walk in. He said normally I would need an appointment. But because he didn't want me to wait over an hour for the next appointment. He plugged the cord into a computer that was sitting right there in front of him and saw the cord was dead. So he replaced it for me.

It's important to make sure when you pull it out do not pull it by the cord, make sure it is pulled by the connector itself. That will help maintain your cord.
I'm sure people at the store yank on the cords and break them

At local Fry's iPad display, saw one Lightning cable completely broken, hanging on by a tiny bit of outer cable sheath, just past the strain relief. The other visibly kinked and strength compromised, but still delivering power.
Never saw 30 pin cables damaged to the point of separating!
Or so quickly (about 2 weeks)!
Really bad quality.
