Ok? What's your point? Do think I'm contradicting myself or something?
EDIT: I see the bold ... You're still not getting it. Of those several dozen, only one or two should be plastic if the final product will be metal. The rest will be metal.

So what are the different kickstarter support levels? If I donate $20k, do I get to tour the facilities or something?

So you think that because I said you should have several dozen prototypes, that you are completely justified spending thousands on a 3D printer?
Again, only one or two prototypes should be plastic. The rest will need to be the final material.

Then how am I supposed to know that the RFID function would work if it isn't used in the prototypes with the aluminum?

You'd be better off buying a CNC machine capable of machining aluminum.

Starting to think aluminum might not work out very well. Just sourcing the material would be difficult in itself.

Now you're starting to understand a few things. Or are you just looking for an excuse to buy a 3D printer? If it's that, we're not your parents - you don't have to justify anything to us. If you want a 3D printer, buy one.

![]() You could probably get a number of prototypes out of aluminum stock such as http://www.amazon.com/Aluminum-Tempe.../dp/B000H9FZ4K not saying it's a good idea, but Aluminum stock is readily available and relatively easy to machine if you have a milling machine or other tools. B

iPhone 5 dimensions: height is 4.87 inches (123.8 mm); the width is 2.31 inches (58.6 mm); the depth is 0.30 inches (7.6 mm) Case dimensions would have to be something like 5" x 2.5" x .4". 12" slab of aluminum @ $80 would be the equivalent of roughly two cases, if I'm lucky, and that's just for the shell/body.... |

Last I checked 12"x12" can be cut into 6 4"x6" pieces or 8 3"x6" pieces. Now you are starting to understand why you might not be able to specify the feature/wish list and price separately, without doing the real work. B

But...you gotta step back. Find a cheap source of Aluminium, and learn to CNC it yourself. Initially, it doesn't have to fit perfectly ... a little oversize will show you if you it blocks RFID in one spot, but the openings let the other radio waves out. Aluminium can be cut with the same bits you use to cut very hard wood if you go slowly. And don't mind replacing bits often. A router and jig and a selection of bits should give you a decent enough prototype to test a few things. You will want a few made up so that you can experiment with where the holes need to go for the radio bits to work. Remember to practice safety. Goggles are the most important. I'm not sure about fumes, but a well ventilated space will help. Do this and you may actually be on the road to inventing something. You do, of course, have an RFID card, eh?.... and more importantly an RFID reader to test this with? Right?
