Remember previous folder

Hi All,

is there a preference anywhere (Mac) for remembering previous folder (where file had been opened)? I seem to remember years ago in a much older OS this was available....

In short, what I would like to do is double click to open Illustrator file & when opened hit 'place' & it defaults to where the file was opened from.

Thanks in advance for any help!
