iPhone 4 touch screen super sensitive during calls!
I've had my iPhone since 11:30am 23 June and I've not really had any calls longer than a couple minutes.
I just now had a phone call that was about 20 minutes. Well it was actually MULTIPLE calls with the same person. The touch screen is so freaking sensitive that I was repeatedly hitting the end call, mute, face time, and even was able to switch over to the keypad and hit tons of numbers during teh call. The sad thing is was I was actually trying to keep the phone away from my face! I NEVER had this problem with my EDGE or 3G. It's almost like it's hyper sensitive. Now I know the comment is "keep it off your face" well I tried but I think it's inevitable. Regardless, I used to rub my face all over my EDGE and 3G phones and never had such issues. I remember having the phone covered in grease from my face (nasty I know oh well) multiple times from complete touchings and never accidently hit any touch buttons during calls! Has anyone else experienced this hyper sensitivity? I mean I have sideburns, could the random individual hairs be touching the screen and the screen THAT sensitive to touch? Holy cow if the phone is going to be this annoying I might just return it and go back to my 3G. Sheesh! PS also had a few dropped calls and terrible reception and distorted audio. Same place I talk on the phone for hours with my old EDGE and 3G. Holy cow!

UPDATE
I've now had many conversations on my phone. It seems the issue is NOT the touch screen, but the proximity sensor or the gyroscope. Whatever turns the touch screen black/idle to active. Now that it is dark, when talking I noticed that any TINY movement of distance between my face and phone brought the touch screen active. I could see it light up in my peripheral vision. I would hold the phone as still as possible, and it would still trigger the touch screen on and off. On my EDGE and 3G phones, I would literally have to pull the phone away from my face and hold it in front of my face for the screen to become active. Anyone else notice this yet? |

Actually I noticed it today as well...when talking with someone the speakerphone turned on and I was calling via Facetime. Thought it was just me doing something dumb and not noticing...
First the touchy reception and now a touchy screen...gotta love it. |

Looks like my issues have already been addressed in a much larger thread. I didn't see it until just now, it was buried.
Please address any further replies into this thread Sorry guys. |

This has been so frustrating for me too. I can't have a phone conversation without my face ending the call, and even sometimes calling someone else. I didn't have this problem when I had the otterbox defender case. I guess I will order another one. It has a plastic cover so I am guessing that it helped the sensitivity issue since this problem started when I changed cases.
Still super frustrating because I want to use any case I like. Maybe I will try putting two screen protectors on it at once. |

Get it replaced. This problem was fixed long ago. Why bring up these ancient threads??? With problems like this just ask Apple.

I just purchased my new iPhone 4 (June 15, 2011) and I am having the same problem, so Givemeabrek - it's not quite so ancient now is it? What a horribly arrogant person U must be.
I am also having the same problem - I actually muted when on a call with the IRS the other day and when I pulled the phone away from my head to see what happened the menu disappeared, by the time I found the menu again they had hung up. I had waited 40 minutes on hold. I constantly mute people now and hit numbers that beeps into the phone so I think there is something wrong. I also never once had this issue with my 3G. I am NOT HAPPY with this supposed new and improved phone. Also the service at my local AT&T store is so arrogant rude and just downright condescending! When I took the phone in the little man told me I had to S-L-O-W-L-Y pull the phone away from ear or the gyroscope would make the menu disappear. He then went on to tell me how he has never had any problems with his. Like I care if he is having problems or not. What sales person would stand there and tell you the truth? |

solution for: iPhone 4 touch screen super sensitive during calls!
After reading about the proximity sensor I realized my screen saver might be the problem. I simply cut the top part of the screen saver off and the problem is solved.
