How can it be, that people with Intel HD 4000 runs League of Legends better than Intel HD 5000, when this statement is said: "According to benchmarks in 3DMark 11, the HD Graphics 5000 is up to 50 percent faster than the previous HD 4000." - Source

I've read comments everywhere suggesting that even 3000 runs at 60 FPS:

''I'm currently using 3000, and get 60+ on all low. I don't really care about how LoL looks, though. Other games I'm lucky to get like...30.''
''HD 3000, i run on all high settings, no shadows, 1900x1080. I avg anywhere from 35-60fps, depending on what is going on in game. Around 30 flat during big team fights, never goes any lower.''
"I have the 3000 and always get 60+ on max settings. I don't have shadows on though because seriously who the hell cares about shadows in this game.""Intel HD 4000 plays it smooth with 50-70 FPS without recording and 35-45 while recording.''

I just received my first MacBook Air with Intel HD 5000, and it plays League of Legends on MAX 30 FPS without shadow. I really thought that I would be able to play much better than this, since data suggested Intel HD 3000 and 4000 to perform pretty well. I didn't buy this machine to game on it (actually bought it for school and daily tasks), but definitely also to game some times with my friends. So please don't attack me with statements like "What did you expect on a mac?", because I made my research and on paper its meant to be better. :S

But what I am asking is, how can these people have better FPS during League of Legends with Intel HD 3000 and 4000 when I am no where near with Intel HD 5000?

first of all you shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet.

I can tell you now that I play league of legends on my MBA on 70fps.

But no, I don't play it... nor any computer games for that matter.


Secondly, it might be your settings. Just relax for now. Dont get tensed. Check the intel hd5000 thread. might help you. Or wait for a haswell gamer to come along.

Game framerates tend to be lower in OSX. That link most likely refers to Windows benchmarks. Beyond that, you didn't read very far.

With simultaneous load on the CPU, the low TDP of the ULV models (15 W) limits the Turbo Boost of the GPU. Although the HD 5000 features 40 Execution Units, the graphics performance is still somewhat below the HD Graphics 4600 with only 20 EUs (HD 4000: 16 EUs). Overall, the HD 5000 is thus just behind the AMD Radeon HD 7660G and at the level of a dedicated Radeon HD 7650M. Current games (as of 2013) will run fluently in low to medium-low settings.

Low to medium settings on Windows probably means low in OSX.

I found it on different forum from simple gamers with no other intention than saying "I got Intel HD 3000 and get X fps, so I would guess with a Intel HD 4000 that would be Y fps." So for me, that seemed reliable enough.

How can you run it with that much FPS? What's your Air's spec? :S

Current games is reference to higher quality games. League of Legends is from 2009, and is not a heavy game like Bioshock, Assasin's Creed or Resident Evil or anything like that. And I still don't run the game fluently on low to medium settings (even when I lower the resolution).

Yeah those 'HD5000 is 50% better than HD4000' just irk me a bit. 3DMark has the luxury of mostly just stressing the GPU, while CPU barely lifts a finger. Our MBA's CPU/HD5000 are very power constrained. Basically, only one - either the cpu or gpu can be on full tilt at a time. Any other combo results in both the CPU & GPU being down clocked. That's why in real life modern gaming that stresses both the CPU & GPU, the 2013 MBA is only a little bit faster than last years model. Despite our MBA's GPU having the full 40 EU like the full-voltage Haswells, it really should've been named HD4400 to give it's true real life gaming performance due to power constraints.

My friend in Nigeria has a terrific business model that will make millions and wants to invite you to be an early investor. You will undoubtedly be rewarded ten-fold at a minimum.

The other thing to be aware of, it takes a couple of months for the improved drivers to come out, to take full advantage of the new hardware. I think that in about 4-6 months, your new MBA will be playing those games with flamingly faster FPS.

In Windows, of course, the Mac drivers never seem to work as well, in my experience.

Firstly the Intel graphics cards aren't designed for games, it's that simple though yes the graphic performance has improved no end but still are no where near playable for new games.

My macbook air runs Diablo 3 though it's not good enough for smooth playback, though I do suspect once drivers have been improved you may see a performance boost.

ive checked reviews online... vids of ppl on bootcamp with hd5000.
everyone who migrated from hd4000 is ecstatic.


by the way, my fav troll is still the put breasts against screen to check for cancer thingie... hah

I think a big issue here is heat displacement, running most games on my 2013 Air the unit gets anywhere from 89-99 C, you can guarantee the chipset is doing some degree of throttling to keep within range, leading to decreased performance.

Naturally the Haswell Macbook Pros will end up better suited for gaming with improved graphics on the CPU, and more room for a dual fan cooler.

Not designed for games? Do you think all the design effort, extra die area, and increased number of EUs are being added just to increase video frame rates?

I for one was quite impressed at how well Crysis 3 ran on the Intel 5200 graphics.

If not for games, what do the improvements in Intel HD Graphics help you do? All cards now pretty much can display HD video in 720P (on Air itself) or 1080P when connected to a TV or other external monitor.

Yup, I wish Intel didn't name it HD5000 as the HD4600 is faster! Broadwell will bring major performance improvements as it will allow much more graphics power within the 15 watt envelope. Prototype broadwell silicon is already showing 30% power reduction courtesy of the 14nm die shrink.

did you try to make sure your vsync is on?

there is a button in the video section of lol under farm rate cap. i set mine to 30 and make sure the check button is on for wait for v sync. it makes the game seem much smoother.
