iPad Why can't you watch 1080p on the new iPad?

Why is it that people cannot watch 1080p videos on the new iPad - specifically on YouTube? Is it essentially the same thing as 720p?

You can't? I always thought you could as 1080P is 1920x1080 and the new iPad has a resolution of 2048x1536..

If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

- I think the mobile site of YouTube on Safari allows 1080P, but not the apps - again correct me if I'm wrong.

Get Mctube pro, if its still free. the app only steam highest resolution video.

If my Ipad 2 can watch 1080, then yours can too.

OP is correct, the 1080p option is missing, even on videos that are known to be 1080p capable on the PC.

Would you happen to have an example of this i.e. movie or video Youtube, Videmo.com that really screams 1080p? Not that I'm doubting you its just that I have yet to notice or even pay attention to any differences and or knew if I was actually watching one for that matter.

I watch 1080P movies all the time on my ipad 4. I get them from the iTunes store.

I did have to go in and change my download preferences to 1080P first though. Otherwise it defaults to 720P.

Look for anything with scenery, landscapes, vibrant colors, lots of small objects, lots of people, etc.

Look up the trailer for Up (the movie), that was one which very clearly showed the differences to my eyes.

I tried Planet Earth HD Amazing Scenery and it shows 1080p in the You Tube title but I'm not really sure if it is playing that resolution on my iPad4.

I have some Ultraviolet movies that I know are HDX and I'm not sure what resolution those are being played back at either.

Yes this, because if youtube is defaulting to 720p then I'm missing out. Oh and do I have to have a youtube account to access this feature? Because I always just open the youtube app (5.1.1) search, select, and watch.

Please advise....

Pretty sure you're not actually watching those videos at 1080p on your iPad 2. You may have selected that option, but the iPad 2 has a resolution of 1024x768.

So Ipad 2 can display more than 720p but not up to 1080P?

i feel like the 1080p file i downloaded, has better qaulity compare the 720p i put in my ipad.

It can decode but can't display, unless you hook it up to an external monitor.

And when you use true pixel-by-pixel mapping (no stretching), the quality (resolution) is even better. (See the open-source player I've written for 1:1 1080p playback.)

Ok I went and logged onto Youtube via their website and went to my settings and set it at ' always play at the highest res when possible' or somthing like that. Then I searched for '1080p videos' one of the many that came up was Tron. This video was very impressive however it was NOT at Blue Ray on a 1080p flat panel levels, at least not the sort that you see on your home theather TV. So to be truethful I'm still not sure if my play back is still 720p.

iPad's screen resolution: 1024x768
720p resolution: 1280x720
1080p resolution: 1920x1080
Hence the ipad doesn't have enough pixels to display HD. It can download them, but it has to resize them to fit into 1024x768
