PRAM/NVRAM has nothing to do with Spotlight. Resetting it will not help. What probably helped is you restarting your Mac, with or without resetting NVRAM.

About NVRAM and PRAM

If Spotlight isn't working properly, try re-indexing your drive:

Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes

If that fails to index, enter the following command in Terminal:

sudo mdutil -i on "/Volumes/your drive name"

This may be a late response, but I came across this thread while trying to find my own solution to this issue. So I registered on MacRumors.com and wrote my first post. Anyways...

I found a solution here:

Simply run the following:

sudo killall -KILL appleeventsd
sudo killall -KILL Finder

I had the same problem, it all resolved itself when I turned off the mouse keys accessibility function.
