How to record streaming video?

1. Start Terminal type "cd /private/var/tmp/folders.501/TemporaryItems" enter

2. This will take you to the folder with the flash video(s) type "ls" enter this will show the contents of the folder. (The flash videos will be FlashTmp1, FlashTmp2...and so on) Choose video 2 for example.

3. type "cp FlashTmp2 ~/Desktop" enter

THATS IT! The file will be moved to your desktop; play it with an flv player, covert it, delete it...ect.


Leopard (slightly more difficult)

1. Start Terminal type "cd /private/var/folders/ee/" enter

2. Type "ls" enter. Look for the folder with a long strange name LIKE eeQUOonjE-GWvpRuzmR29+++TI (it changes).

3. Type "cd eeQUOonjE-GWvpRuzmR29+++TI/TemporaryItems" enter

4. This will take you to the folder with the flash video type "ls" enter this will show the contents of the folder. (The flash videos will be FlashTmp1, FlashTmp2...and so on) Choose video 2 for example.

5. type "cp FlashTmp2 ~/Desktop" enter

THATS IT! The file will be moved to your desktop; play it, covert it, ect.

just to put it up front, screenflow costs $99. haven't tried it so it might be worth the bucks; seems like a lot, though.

haven't tried it yet but i think they have a free trial period

jaksta for mac is $50 bucks while the "deluxe" version is $70.

too bad there isn't a good, free app....

I find that you get easily the best quality from video captures by simply using the Quicktime player. Its free and already installed!

Run it, and go to File/New Screen Recording. Click the red button, select the area of the screen you want to record. Voila!

If you want sound, you can either connect your 'sound out' jack to your 'sound in' jack, or use 'Soundflower' - a free open source driver that creates an additional, mapable audio input. Either way, you select it in the Quicktime screen recording screen by clicking the little white arrow.

What about Lion. Can you record streaming video in lion without having to buy a flippin app??? and not with quicktime or any of that. Im talking good quality, i can open full screen and the sound is good too.

Not sure if somebody answered this, I just breezed over the rest of the thread, but is there a solution similar to downloadhelper for Google Chrome? I prefer chrome, but have to switch over to the slower, clunkier Firefox to download video with the downloadhelper plugin.

The only thing i just noticed is that when trying to Dl a 360p youtube clip i didn't have any other option than 240p, anyone know if there is a way around this?

To capture streaming video in Snow Leopard is very simple.

1. Open area on your screen that you want to record.
2. Open Quicktime.
3. From menu bar: File>New Screen Recording.
4. Black Screen Recording window appears (red button in middle).
5. Click on red button.
6. Pop-up screen appears. Click on "start recording".
7. Hold down command key.
8. Hold down mouse and drag cursor until you have the screen size you want.
9. Let go of command key and mouse.
10. To finish recording, click on the "stop recording" tab at the top right of your screen.
11. Your video will be saved in "movies" under Users as "Screen Recording.mov"

To record the sound at the same time, in step 4 above, pulldown the menu to the right of the red button and select your choice under "Microphone"

Actually, there is a better method to capture streaming video in Snow Leopard.

1. Open your browser to show the webpage that contains the video that you want to record.
2. Resize your browser screen so it ONLY shows what you want to record, and nothing else.
3. Open Quicktime.
4. From menu bar: File>New Screen Recording.
5. Black Screen Recording window appears (red button in middle).
6. Click on red button.
7. Pop-up screen appears. Click on "start recording".
8. To finish recording, click on the "stop recording" tab at the top right of your screen.
