But the problem is that you'll need small frontends, and those guys suggest Mac Minis (because they actually use less power than Atom PCs when playing recordings). However, they apparently didn't get the memo yet that there are ARM-based $50 Android/SmartTV "HDMI sticks" that are capable of playing 720p HDTV, run GNU/Linux and are perfect for that purpose. Maybe in 2014.

You might want to look at something like a HDHomerun + Synology NAS with DVBlink software. You can use zap2xml to get a good EPG (7+ days) for free. Even has free smartphone apps you can stream with.
You'd need a front end to watch it on your TV. It's DLNA compatible. Those "HDMI sticks" or a Rasp Pi are pretty good values for the dollars.
