Help with internal hard drive

I ejected a hard drive on my desktop without dragging it to the trash. I now get a message to reformat the drive. I need the data that is on it. Is there a way to correct my mistake?

How did you eject that hard drive then?

Does it show up in Disk Utility?

What Mac and what Mac OS X version do you use?
