iMovie 11: sluggish dragging of cutaways (need a Cutaway Whisperer)

Oh, I'm about to throw something!
I've searched all over for an answer to this but may be searching for the wrong terms.

So, I have a long clip over which I'm placing a few cutaways of powerpoint slides. I'm snipping the cutaway to show glimpses of the speaker. No problem here, as the cutaway is removed and the original clip is shown.

BUT, when I snip out an extraneous piece of the cutaway and do not want the speaker to be shown, I need to drag the cutaway to the left so that it butts up against the previous snippet of cutaway.

You'd think this would be easy as it's just a simple drag & drop. Classic move! But it's sluggish and heavy... sometimes won't move at all. It's like i'm taming a wild buffalo. Using the arrow key is much more responsive, but since it moves a hair-width per stroke, that is not the answer.

Is there a hot key, or a magic spell? Is anyone a cutaway whisperer?

Thanks,
Anne
