Elgato video format
I have been ripping my VHS Tape collection using Elgato. It certainly works well, but sometimes, instead of a .m4v file I end up with a .mp4 file. Anyone know why - what determines which format a movie (VHS Tape) will be ripped to when using Elgato?

Both extensions refer to MPEG-4 video. The difference between .mp4 and .m4v is that .m4v is intended to be played in iTunes. If the .m4v is protected, then it can be played only in authorized iTunes. If the .m4v is not protected, then you are free to change the extension to .mp4. In this case, there is no difference in the video. Why did Elgato choose to use .m4v for some files and .mp4 for others? Who knows. Because there is no difference in the video, it is not something to worry about.
