I would like to plug my macbook into my TV and then have the sound come out from my surround sound speakers that my TV would normally go through. Right now I'm plugging an HDMI from my mac to the HDMI 3 where nothing is plugged in and the sound is coming out through the TV speakers.

there are 2 ways to do this.

1. route the sound from the TV to the surround speakers, either done via an optical cable or ARC if both your TV and Stereo support it

2. run an optical cable from your mac to the speakers, you need a toslink to mini cable
it will plug into the headphone jack, all macs for the past several years have had a dual optical/analog port.
